A-League Semi-Finals Round 2: Phoenix's Chance to Steal Victory? Sydney FC Holds on to Moral Victory
The second leg of the A-League semi-finals resumes on the afternoon of May 18th. Wellington Phoenix held a stalemate in the first leg away, mirroring their regular season performances. Melbourne Victory's fierce attacks failed to breach Phoenix's goal, and the situation may not change much in the second leg.

Wellington Phoenix vs. Melbourne Victory - A Stalemate is Real

Both sides had clear strategies in the first leg. Melbourne Victory, playing at home, sought an advantage by controlling possession and creating 23 shooting opportunities. In contrast, Wellington Phoenix planned to resolve matters at home, prioritizing ball control over launching attacks. They managed only 7 shots, with just one on target. Despite their inability to score, Melbourne Victory's attacking organization was efficient, with a possession rate of only 54%. Their threefold advantage in shots was thwarted by Phoenix goalkeeper Paulsen's outstanding performance, making him the best player of the match. Although Phoenix had a win and a draw against Melbourne Victory at home during the regular season, Victory still maintained dominance on the field. However, knockout matches differ significantly from regular season play. If Phoenix continues to play passively, Victory will gladly oblige, as there is no rush to vie for the regular season title. Melbourne Victory demonstrated equal resilience in the first round of knockout matches.

Both teams currently boast stable defenses, suggesting a tactical game with limited aggression in this match. It's unlikely that there will be standout performances in regular time or extra time. If it comes down to penalties, Melbourne Victory, who advanced via penalties in the first round, will be more confident.
Central Coast Mariners vs. Sydney FC - Clash of Styles Evident
Despite being defending champions in the playoffs, Central Coast Mariners lost both regular-season matches against Sydney FC this season (Mariners lost only six matches in the regular season). Historical records favor Sydney FC, so when the two teams clashed in the first leg of the playoffs, Sydney FC did not position themselves as the weaker side. They started well and took the lead in the 25th minute. However, as the game progressed, Sydney FC began to feel the control of the defending champions. Despite falling behind, the Mariners remained composed and soon dominated the rhythm of the game, equalizing before halftime and taking the lead early in the second half. At this point, Sydney FC's players began to lose their composure, with two players receiving red cards for malicious fouls. The first red card was shown to Rodeveld for a studs-up challenge, despite the contact with the opponent's shin being minimal. Upon review, the referee made the right decision. The second red card was for Holman's elbow to an opponent, a straight red due to the severity and impact of the foul. The Mariners showed threat on the counterattacks, even with two players less, penetrating into Sydney FC's penalty area. Although they managed only 4 shots throughout the game, each was narrowly missed. For the Mariners, failing to extend their lead with two more players in such a situation is a major concern. This season's playoffs do not give an advantage to away goals, reducing the difficulty of Sydney FC's comeback. Although the Mariners have a record of fewer wins and more losses against Sydney FC at home, their home advantage may not significantly impact their opponents. Both teams are likely to perform at around 20% of their strength.
